History and Personality:
Luffy is the son of the wizard Dragon D. Monkey, but since his father skipped town before his second son's birth, Luffy never got to know his father. In fact, he knows so little about the man that he doesn't think of himself as having a father. Or a mother, really, since the muggle woman was never part of his life long enough to make an impression.

The only blood relatives Luffy knows are his grandfather, Garp D. Monkey, and his half-brother by a different mother, Ace D. Portgas. Ace and Luffy were taken in by their grandfather, and he trained raised them for a time. However, because Garp's work began to make him travel more and more, he decided to entrust the boys to a friend in their coastal hometown when Luffy was six.

Their stay with Garp's friend didn't even last a year, as the young boys proved to be more than he could handle, nearly eating him out of house and home. Shanks, a drifter who had recently settled down in the village and taken a liking to the boys, asked to gain custody of the two, and they've been with him ever since. Garp is unaware to this day that his grandsons are living with Shanks, which is perhaps fortunate since he has an intense dislike of the man.

Luffy looks up to Shanks and has gained a number of things from his guardian: a love of the sea (though Luffy is victim of a magical malady that has left him completely unable to swim since he'll sink like a rock in the water), the belief that one's self is less important than one's friends, and a straw hat.

Luffy and his brother have always gotten along well enough while growing up, though they are very competitive with each other. Ace has always bested his brother in almost every competition they've started, with the sole exception of eating contests (in which Ace has a natural disadvantage, since he's quite prone to fall asleep while eating). Luffy shares a similar case of narcolepsy, but his is far less severe and more likely to manifest as sleeping for days after an extended bout of intense physical or magical activity.

On the day Luffy received his invitation to attend Hogwarts, he announced to Ace and Shanks that he was going to be a great wizard and become the "Wizard King." When it was pointed out to him that there wasn't a Wizard King, Luffy wasn't phased: if there wasn't one, he'd just be the first. Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat after the announcement, telling him to hang onto it until the day he fulfilled his dream.

Luffy is the kind of person that stands out, if for no other reason than he doesn't know the meaning of the word "subtle" (I mean it. He probably doesn't know the meaning.). He's gung-ho about everything he does, but his enthusiasm is not necessarily indicative of skill. He's aware of his shortcomings, but isn't bothered by them in the least; in particular, he's bad at anything requiring finesse. Luffy is simple-minded, aiming straight for the heart of matters and ignoring all the "unimportant" details.
